The Man Who Beat The Man

Dmitry Bivol makes the 10th defence of his WBA light heavyweight title on Saturday, as he takes on the former WBO super middleweight champion Gilberto "Zurdo" Ramirez in Abu Dhabi.

This is Bivol's first fight since his career best victory against the pound for pound star Canelo Alvarez back in May, when he defied the odds by dominating the Mexican over 12 rounds.

Gilberto Ramirez will be looking to avenge his countryman's loss, and more importantly, announce himself as a genuine player at 175 lbs, alongside Bivol and the battering ram that is Artur Beterbiev.

Before his victory over Alvarez, Bivol arguably lacked the pedigree win on his resume that his talent deserved. With that now in his pocket, it'll be fascinating to see whether it'll translate into even more confidence in the ring than he already has.

He's made no secret of his desire to become undisputed at the weight and take on the only other man who (currently) holds titles at the weight in Beterbiev.

Ramirez could be a banana skin in these plans.

He's undefeated, a former defending champion in his own right and crucially, has displayed an ability to consistently improve over time.

He carries good power considering his has moved up, and his pressure fighting style could pose problems for the more calculating and sniper like Bivol.

It'll likely be much more competitive than the oddsmakers have it, as two undefeated champions put their records on the line.

What to look for in the fight:

  1. Rhythm. It's very difficult to disrupt Bivol when he gets into a good rhythm with his jab and footwork. Should he be able to avoid any difficult moments with Ramirez, outboxing the Mexican over 12 rounds is his most likely route to victory.

  2. Body work. Ramirez is a hard hitting body puncher and he'll look to invest early in trying to slow Bivol down. If he has prolonged success, it could bring the fight to mid-close range, where Zurdo has a much better chance of winning than his odds suggest.

  3. Feints. Look for Bivol to score heavily with his feint jab to left hook, which is an effective weapon against southpaws like Ramirez.

Two Great Matchups At The Apex

A women’s strawweight fight between Marina Rodriguez and Amanda Lemos is this weekend’s UFC main event in Las Vegas, Nevada.

A featherweight fight between Bryce Mitchell and Movsar Evloev was the originally scheduled main event, but it fell through due to Evloev suffering an injury in October, bumping the aforementioned fight up to the main event.

Neil Magny vs. Daniel Rodriguez is scheduled for three rounds in the welterweight division as the co-main event, with the former only one win away from passing Georges St. Pierre for the most wins in the welterweight history.

What to look for in the fights:

  1. Power. Rodriguez is a very accurate and crisp striker, with a good control of range. Lemos fights more on instinct, but has the power to be able to put away most strawweights. Rodriguez's ability to navigate the power difference could be the key to victory.

  2. Diversity. Magny has a more diverse skillset than Rodriguez, and this could prove decisive in a fight that looks unlikely to end in a finish. His striking is respectable compared to D-Rod's, but his ability to threaten with takedowns and submissions may edge it for the UFC veteran.
