All Female Card Finally Goes Ahead
After the original September 10th date was postponed due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the first all female boxing card in UK history goes down this weekend in London.
The main event sees unified middleweight champion and double Olympic gold medallist Claressa Shields go up against WBO champion Savannah Marshall, with the winner officially recognised as the undisputed middleweight champion.
The two have been going back and forth for years, and the bout holds a little extra weight due to Marshall having inflicted Shields' only loss to date back in the amateurs in 2013.
The co-main event also has a lot of personal spite behind it, as Mikaela Mayer takes on Alycia Baumgardner in a unified super featherweight bout for the WBO, WBC and IBF titles.
What to look for in the fights:
Power vs precision. Both fights see power punches (Baumgardner & Marshall) take on boxers who like to move and strike with precision. Should Mayer and Shield's chins hold up, we could see both fights tilting in their favour across the distance.
Beware the 1-2. Marshall has great power in her right hand and an educated jab, but her offence can be slightly predictable. Look for Shields to suss out her timing early on and take it the distance.
Wilder Looks To Rebound
Deontay Wilder returns to the ring almost exactly a year after his barnburner trilogy fight against Tyson Fury, taking on his former sparring partner for said fight Robert Helenius at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn.
Had this fight been 3 years ago, there likely wouldn't have been as much intrigue or debate as to the outcome. Wilder was still undefeated and hadn't had two bruising defeats against Tyson Fury.
Helenius also would have been an easier target given he had just been knocked out by former Wilder victim Gerald Washington, and seemingly on the way out.
The tide has shifted though, and whilst question marks hang over Wilder following two consecutive KO defeats, Helenius is riding the high of back to back KO victories of his own, against contender Adam Kownacki.
However, Wilder remains one of the most devastating heavyweight punchers of all time, and the fact that he has dropped every opponent he's been in the ring with (including Fury multiple times) will stand him in good stead as he looks to make a fresh charge at the heavyweight title.
The co-main event of Wilder vs Helenius is a great matchup of former super-middleweight champions, as Caleb Plant takes on Anthony Dirrell over 12 rounds.
Both have been very honest about their dislike for one another, and the animosity adds an intriguing element to what should prove to be a good fight.
Dirrell is coming off a highlight reel KO against Marcos Hernandez on the Canelo-Plant undercard, whilst Plant is fighting for the first time since his spirited but ultimately unsuccessful challenge for the undisputed middleweight championship against Canelo Alvarez.
What to look for in the fights:
Wilder's aggression. Wilder may be a little more cautious in the opening rounds (as he was in the trilogy fight), especially against a thudding puncher like Helenius.
Helenius has a habit of keeping his lead hand low, which as the fight progresses will lead to inevitable openings for Wilders devastating right hand.
Plant's jab. Caleb Plant had good success with landing his jab against Alvarez, and against Dirrell he'll have a much more stationary target. Look for him to land it frequently and change angles against a slower, ageing Dirrell.
Revenge Or Repeat?
Devin Haney returns down under, this time as undisputed lightweight champion, to make his first defence against the man he took most of those titles from back in June, George Kambosos Jr.
The fact that the fight is being held at a 14,000 capacity venue as opposed to the 60,000 seater Marvel Stadium from the first fight, shows the lack of interest in the fight from the locals, and really makes you question whether rematch clauses should be as present as they are in boxing.
Whilst there was little from the first fight to suggest that the rematch will go any differently, Kambosos Jr insists that now he's free of the burden of titles, he'll take a much more aggressive approach than he did last time out.
What to look for in the fight:
Haney's power. Haney hasn't got a stoppage win since 2019 when he captured the WBC interim. Given how familiar he'll have become to Kambosos's movements, he could look to close the show between 9-12.
Timing. Whilst Kambosos can't compete on pure speed, should he be able to time Haney will well place right hands, he definitely has the power to trouble him.
Caution to the wind. Kambosos has way less to lose this time around, and he could look to go after Haney and take greater risks than last time.
