Battle Of The Baddest
Whatever your thoughts are on the crossover between boxing and mixed martial arts, no one can doubt the scale of tomorrow’s heavyweight clash between the two most dangerous fighters in their respective sports.
WBC and Lineal Heavyweight champion Tyson Fury will face the former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou in a boxing bout in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in what is the biggest combat crossover event since Floyd Mayweather took on Conor McGregor in August 2017.
Undoubtedly, the more seasoned and experienced boxer Fury is the favourite, and rightly so. He’s undefeated as a professional, having regained the unified heavyweight championship of the world following almost 3 years out of the sport.
There are very few that doubt his pedigree as the best heavyweight in the sport, and arguably the best heavyweight of his generation.
Francis Ngannou is no doubt an admirer of The Gypsy King’s achievements. A self-confessed boxing fanatic, his dream before MMA was to become a professional boxer.
Fate had other plans, and the KO artist from Cameroon soon found himself labelled as the most dangerous man on the planet, leading to a title shot in 2018 against then-UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic.
He came up short but rebuilt and conquered the championship 3 years later against the same man, knocking him out in devastating fashion in 2 rounds.
He’s since parted with the UFC and carved his own path, but he never lost his championship in the octagon, leaving the organisation as the top fighter in his weight class.
It’s a tough ask for someone making their professional boxing debut to defeat the consensus number 1 heavyweight in the world.
But if you want to talk about “punchers chances”, it’s hard to argue that anyone has ever possessed as much of one as Ngannou does on Saturday night (except for maybe Deontay Wilder).
Whatever happens, it’ll be bound to entertain, and we’ll know for certain who the baddest man on the planet is come Sunday morning.
Also on the card:
Joseph Parker vs Simon Kean
Martin Bakole vs Carlos Takam
Fabio Wardley vs David Adeleye
