Fight News From Around The 🌍

An Unexpected Rematch

When Josh Warrington initially beat Kiko Martinez back in May 2017, it was meant to be the last time they faced off.

Warrington was being built up towards a world title challenge, whilst Martinez, then 31, was considered to be at the backend of his career.

He already had 7 losses, and his time as a champion at Super-Bantamweight had been and gone.

He was considered the litmus test for Featherweight contenders to see if they were ready to make that jump to world level.

But boxing has a habit of flipping scripts, and fast forward to 2022, and it's a situation few boxing pundits, let alone fans, would have predicted.

Warrington hasn't won a fight since 2019, and will be looking to win back the world title that he never technically lost in the ring.

He did however, suffer his first defeat back in 2020, as he was knocked in brutal fashion by the previously unheralded Mauricio Lara, who stopped him in 9 rounds on home soil.

Their rematch last year was meant to correct the wrongs and set Warrington back on track, but he once again looked unconvincing and uncomfortable with the young Mexican's power.

On the other side, Kiko Martinez revitalised his career by knocking out newly crowned IBF champion Kid Galahad in 6 rounds, dropping him twice with stiff right hands.

The Spanish veteran will be feeling extremely confident ahead of their matchup.

Despite being on the losing end of a majority decision to Warrington 5 years ago, many ringside felt he had done enough to win.

Whilst maybe he should have had his first loss that night, Martinez will be looking to eliminate all doubt and cement himself as more than just a resurgent champion, but a dominant one.

Warrington on the other hand, surely can't afford too many more slip ups at the highest level.

Blaydes Looks Towards Title Charge

Curtis Blaydes seems to have been custom built to be a dominant UFC Heavyweight champ.

A fantastic wrestler, the current record holder for the most takedowns in UFC heavyweight history, who isn't afraid to also mix it up with his hands, he seemed like champion material from the get-go.

However, he has a bad habit of losing at just the wrong time.

After having his title shot hopes halted by a KO loss to Derrick Lewis a year ago, Blaydes bounced back with a dominant performance, outwrestling Jairzinho Rozenstruik.

Whilst it didn't set the world alight, it was a smart performance against an excellent striker who had no answer to Blaydes' exceptional ground game, which is miles ahead of most of the division.

On paper, this matchup against Chris Daukaus looks like it won't go too differently.

Fresh off a KO loss to Derrick Lewis, the UFC isn't doing Daukaus any favours by putting him up against one of the divisions real veterans.

Daukaus himself possesses KO power on the feet and is a black belt in BJJ, so this could present a further challenge when Blaydes takes him down.

It is a question when and not if, which is telling as to how this fight is likely going to go.

A win here allows momentum to build for a title shot, potentially an interim one, whilst a loss is a big backward step in an increasingly competitive division.
