Revenge or Repeat?

Oleksandr Usyk was only two fights into his heavyweight career when doubts emerged about his ability to compete with the elite of the division.

Despite his credentials as an undisputed cruiserweight champion, Olympic gold medalist, and future Hall of Famer, Usyk’s early heavyweight performances against Chazz Witherspoon and Derek Chisora in 2021 left some questioning his readiness to fight the “big men”.

Usyk defied expectations, defeating Anthony Joshua twice in 2021 and 2022 to become heavyweight champion. In 2023, he defended his titles against the now IBF champion Daniel Dubois and then achieved a split decision victory over Fury, becoming the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 1999.

Tomorrow night, he gets the chance to repeat the feat and cement himself as the the heavyweight (and possibly the boxer) of his generation.

Tyson Fury has been written off himself, albeit in a very different way.

He came back from 3 years off and various mental health battles to reclaim the heavyweight crown that he had won back in 2015 (in another major upset against Wladimir Klitschko).

A mega-fight with Joshua never materialised, but this didn’t stop Fury from building his way up to becoming the consensus #1 heavyweight in the world, dispatching Deontay Wilder twice, Dillian Whyte, Otto Wallin and Derek Chisora in a reign that saw him extend his undefeated record and build up into an inevitable clash with Usyk.

Should he win tomorrow, it’s very possible we’ll see these two men meet again for the final time in what would be Fury’s second major trilogy and another absolute treat for boxing fans.

Should he lose, there would be no shame in coming up second best to one of the greatest fighters we’ve seen in recent years.

If tomorrow is anything like their first fight, we are in for another modern classic.

Conquer or be Conquered.
